James M. “Jim” Paul, Jr., 86, a long-time resident of Cayce, South Carolina, died February 5, 2023 at Lexington Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Paul was born on December 28, 1936 in Conway, South Carolina, the son of James M. Paul, Sr. and Grace P. Paul. He graduated from Conway High School and worked as a sports broadcaster before joining the U.S. Army, where he spent several decades as an army recruiter and became highly-regarded as a trainer and motivator for other recruiters.
A true “citizen of the world,” Jim never met a stranger. Whether he encountered someone for the first time at the local diner counter or for the hundredth time as a neighbor or co-worker, Jim approached and treated everyone as a valued friend. His warmth, sense of humor and zest for life were treasures that he generously shared with all his friends and family, and for which he will always be remembered.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Linda Nunnery Paul; and by his two children, Roy B. Owings, III and Melissa Owings West. He is survived by two sisters—Mary Ratliff of Sanford, North Carolina and Eunice Cox of Fort Mill, South Carolina—and several nieces and nephews.
A service celebrating Jim’s life will be held on Friday, February 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Broadacres Baptist Church, 2350 Taylor Road, Cayce, South Carolina 29033. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broadacres Baptist Church.
