At the age of 16, Don joined his older brother, Cecil, in the construction business as a carpenter. Don served on the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the Home Builders Association and was also a founding member of the Remodelers Council of Greater Columbia. He also served as president and director of local chapters of the National Home Improvement Council and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Don was a proud veteran of the US Army and served his country honorably while stationed in Germany.
Don was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and was an active member of Oakwood Baptist Church for 37 years. He was an instrumental member of the Building and Grounds Committee at the Church. Don was a faithful and loving servant of the Lord, his family, and his community.
He enjoyed spending time and playing golf with his family and friends in the Northeast Georgia mountains. Don was an avid USC Gamecock fan. He also cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren at their various sporting events and school activities.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Kathy Stedman Lucas; children Charles “Darry” (Kelly) Lucas, John (Windy) Lucas, Matthew (Amanda) Lucas; grandchildren Alexis (Matthew) Godwin, Brooke (Luke) Jones, Savannah (John) Carter, Colton Lucas, and Caroline Lucas; great-grandson Jacob Godwin; many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law Jodi Lucas, Ruth (Larry) Stedman Welborn, and brother-in-law Ray (Liz) Stedman.
