Wanda Elaine H. Brasington

September 5, 1946 — July 6, 2021

Wanda Elaine Brasington, 74, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, surrounded by her family. Born in Charleston, South Carolina on September 5, 1946 to the late Earl and Deline Cope Hayden, Wanda grew up in Cope, South Carolina until moving to Columbia in the 1950s. She graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1964 and was retired after 35 years of faithful service to the State of South Carolina. Her career began with the South Carolina State Board of Nursing, where she spent the vast majority of her service. The Board later merged with other agencies to create the South Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation (LLR), where Wanda worked with Residential Buildings and other areas of the agency until her retirement.
Wanda’s love of family, life, and service to others was apparent in many ways. She was a member of Pineview Baptist Church in West Columbia where she sang in the choir, served as the Bereavement Coordinator, and participated in and supported many other church activities and functions. She was also an active member of Thursday Morning Bible Study at Direction Church. She was also past president of the Pineview Ruritan Club in West Columbia and a member of the hostess committee of the Pilot Club of Columbia. Wanda loved cooking, entertaining, traveling, and caring for others.
Wanda is survived by her two loving children, Donald Patrick Brasington and Anna Michelle Brasington; five grandchildren, Victoria Brasington, Lauren Brasington Matthews (Shane), Alexandria Brasington, Matthew Brasington, and Carl Joseph “CJ” Brasington Boozer; great grandchildren Jaxon and Sadie Matthews and Callaway Mills; her niece, Donna Garris Lowe (Keith) and nephew, Stephen Garris (Joyce); and by Frank Carl Brasington, father of her children. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Walter Earl Hayden, and sister, Martha Garris Cordova. Wanda is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Ellen Hayden, Joyce Wise, Bobbie Jones, and Julie Martin, as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and her circle of dear friends. Wanda never met a stranger and she was never at a loss for words.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Eau Claire Baptist Church in Columbia at 2:00 p.m. with visitation following the service. Memorials may be made to Carolina Children's Home in memory of Wanda H. Brasington.
Pallbearers will be Todd Blalock, Stuart Hope, Mel Mazyck, Daniel Smith, Phillip Smith, and Russell Snelgrove.
The family would like to thank Pruitt Hospice, Hannah, Lauren, Cheryl, and Alberta, and caregivers Lillie, Monica, Carolyn, and Estefany for their loving care and compassion. The family would also like to express deep sincere gratitude to Leah Dorman for a lifelong friendship and for the exceptional and compassionate care provided to Wanda during her final weeks at home.
