Virginia Ayers Darbee (1917 – 2016)
Mrs. Virginia Ayers Darbee of West Columbia, SC died on Tuesday, April 5, at Lexington Medical Center. She was born in Lebanon, VA, the daughter of Elizabeth Gilmer and James Morgan Ayers.
She was a graduate from Lebanon VA High School and National Business College, Roanoke, VA. In 1938 she was appointed Deputy Clerk, U S District Court for the Wes tern District of VA . In 1956 she was designated Chief Deputy Clerk of said court . In 1969 she was appointed Clerk of the US District Court of Western VA and served until retirement in 1972.
In 1972 she married Garnett E. Darbee who preceded her in death. She was preceded in death by three sisters Gilmer Horton, Anne Havens, and Charlotte Powers . She is survived by one sister, Mary Alice Peterson of New Bern, NC. Five brothers preceded her in death; James Ayers, William Ayers, David Ayers, Richard Ayers, and Hugh Ayers. Nieces are Betsy Havens-Calk, Anne Coppenhaver, Elizabeth Powers- B yrd, Jacqu e Ayers, Kathy Ayers, Patty Ayers, Karyn Ayers and Trina McFadden. Nephews are Towe Havens, Robert Haven s, Brent Havens, T om Powers and Alex Ayers. She is also survived by numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews .
In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Darbee requested donations to Epworth Children’s Home, Columbia, SC.
Visitation will be at Frost Funeral Home in Abingdon from 12:30-1:30 then followed by a graveside service April 23 rd , at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon, Virginia. A reception after the service will be at Martha Washington Inn
