Vernon Dwayne Powers Obituary Vernon Dwayne Powers passed away Friday, May 7, 2021 at the VA Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. He was born March 10, 1933 in Grier, New Mexico to Weldon Powers and Leta Hawes, the eldest of their two sons. He joined the Navy shortly after his father’s early death where he served until receiving a medical discharge after an injury. He married Nadyne Howell in Portales, New Mexico, September 26, 1953. They made their home in Amarillo, Texas for the next twelve years. A daughter, Kitty Wilkes and son, Kelly Wayne Powers were born to this union. In 1965 he married Marjorie Cook and they made their home in Canal Fulton, Ohio. After her death he married Helen Ellinwood, March 11, 1979 and the couple moved to West Columbia, South Carolina where he had lived for over 30 years. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Melvin Eugene Powers; his ex- wives, Nadyne and Marjorie; his son, Kelly and a granddaughter Rachel Ann Wilkes. He is survived by his daughter, Kitty of Montreal, Quebec; two grandsons, Noah Wilkes of Beaverton, Oregon and Jerry Kent Brown of Midlothian, Texas; a granddaughter Kandy Lee Powers of Brant, Michigan and five great grandchildren, Sabreena Jo Hammond, David Jay Hammond, Chelsee Jane Hammond, Abigail Jewel Hammond and Collin Jaccob Hammond also of Brant, Michigan.
