Shelvy Ann Ellisor Sturkie

July 30, 1937-January 18, 2021
Shelvy was born July 30, 1937 according to her mother.  The medical records say she was born on July 31, 1937.  We always celebrated on the 30th! Her parents were Ernest Olee Ellisor and Susilue Hatchell Ellisor.  She married George Lee Sturkie on November 25, 1953.  They had 5 children; Baby Boy Sturkie, Georgetta (Steve) Bachman, Roslyn (Fred) Smith, Billy (Linda) Sturkie and Gerard Sturkie, 20 grandchildren (including spouses) and 26 great grandchildren.  She has 2 sisters, Thalia E Deaver and Bernice E Grigsby.  She has 4 in-laws; Hilda Ellisor, Janie Shumpert, Heyward Shumpert and JoAnn Sturkie.  She was predeceased by her husband George, brothers Philip and George Ellisor, sister-in-law Ruth Ellisor and brother-in-laws Lewis Deaver, Tommy Grigsby and David Sturkie.
She retired from the Postal Service in 1997.  Her favorite things were traveling, family, church and quilting.  She was known for her 7 layer chocolate cake.  Forty plus years we ate together on Tuesday evenings and Sunday lunch .  She made a quilt for each of her grandchildren when they got married and one for each great grandchild when they were born. She taught the 4-5 year old Sunday School class for many years. She was a member of a quilting guild, craft club and the Loyalty Sunday School Class.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Congaree Baptist Church on Sunday February 7th at 4PM . In respect for others, we ask that you wear a face mask.  The service will be streamed live via Facebook.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift in her memory to Congaree Baptist Church, 101 Pineridge Drive, West Columbia SC.
