Richard Irwin Goodwin, 76, entered the more immediate presence of the Lord on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
He was born in Columbia, South Carolina on August 17, 1948, to the late John Way and May Amalia Miles Goodwin. He graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School in Columbia.
On March 7, 1968, Mr. Goodwin enlisted in the United States Air Force. He received his basic training at Lackland Military Training Center in Texas and was stationed at Galena Air Force Base, Alaska (1968), F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming (1969), Charleston Air Force Base, South Carolina (1972), Howard Air Force Base, Panama (1973), and Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota (1976).
He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved animals and nature. As a young man in Alaska, he hunted caribou and moose, and enjoyed ice fishing. In Panama, he landed sailfish, dolphin, and peacock bass. His outdoor adventures took him to Canada and across the United States. At home, he loved fishing on the Santee River, shrimping in Beaufort, and deer hunting as a member of Redland Hunt Club in Salley. He shared his experiences with his grandchildren who also love to hunt and fish.
Mr. Goodwin owned and operated Goodwin Roofing, worked as a subcontractor for HUD, and retired in 2012.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Marie Gleaton Goodwin, son Glenn Lee McKinney and his wife Barbara of O'Fallon, Missouri; daughters Ricki Kay McMahan and her husband Shane of Charleston, Jennifer Ann Passmore and her husband Jay of Mount Pleasant, and Melanie Joy Moseley and her husband Greg of Leesville; and six grandchildren: Claire Moseley, J.R.
