Nancy Cormack, 94, went to be with The Lord on December 18th, 2023 – shortly before her 95thbirthday.
Nancy was born in New York to Rose Cormack and William Joseph Cormack, Sr. and graduated from Dreher High School in Columbia. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Education. She also received a Master's in Religious Education from Saint Michael’s College in Vermont.
She worked for the University of South Carolina. Taught second and third grade at Saint Joseph’s Catholic School in Columbia, South Carolina for several years and later was Director of Religious Education for several catholic churches throughout South Carolina. She worked into her 80’s and served the Lord well.
During her life, she demonstrated grit, determination, and wit to her family and friends. She LOVED her morning coffee. She would always ask every morning if the coffee was ready and said, “coffee is a gift from God”. Ice cream after dinner was a “must” but vanilla only please. She was an avid reader for many years, keeping her mind sharp and often demonstrated an extensive vocabulary. She took time to impart education even to her great-niece Christina by helping with homework and imploring the importance of eating all of one’s vegetables. She helped raise her 3 nieces with her sister Alice and mother Rose and made sure they were exposed to the arts and took ballet. More than once, she opened her home to family who needed a place to stay for a little while.
Nancy was pre-deceased in death by her parents; brother, William Joseph Cormack, Jr.; sister Alice Cormack Jowers; her beloved niece, Theresa Cormack (whom she raised as her own); nephew, William (Billy) Joseph Cormack, III; and niece Kathleen Cormack Russell. Nancy is survived by her niece, Jean Cormack Bass, of Houston, Texas; great-nieces, Alisea (Andy) Holt and Christina Bass of Columbia, South Carolina; great nephews, Jeffrey Russell of Los Angeles, California and Troy Cormack of Raleigh, North Carolina; great-great nephews, Davis Holt and Sterling Nicholas Heaton of Columbia, South Carolina; and last but certainly not least her ever loyal cat, Oscar (aka Houdini), whom she described as her “best friend.”
Special thanks to her caregivers during this last year, Karen, Regina, and Denisa who gave her wonderful care and friendship as well as Debra (CNA), Chris (Chaplain), and Stephanie (Nurse) with hospice. Each was a blessing from God to Nancy, showing compassion and kindness.
For those who would like to pay their respects, the family will receive visitors in their home at 123 Spring Point Dr., Columbia, SC on Sat, December 23 from 12 –2 pm.
