Loy Youngblood

Ret. Ass istant Chief Loy L. Youngblood, 65, of Columbia, SC, better known as “Blood”, entered the presence of His Savior May 2, 2018, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, surrounded by his family, close friends, and those who loved him.

A Celebration of Life Service will take place on May 19, 2018, 12pm, at McEntire Joint National Guard Base , Eastover, SC .  It will be held at the McEntire Fire and Emergency Services Building with the Rev. F. Joseph Lennon officiating.

Born June 30, 1952 in Columbia, he was the eldest son of the late Samuel L. Youngblood and the late Vivian T. Youngblood. He was also preceded in death by his son, Jonathan Ryan Youngblood.

Mr. Youngblood was a graduate of Dreher High School, class of 1970 , and later furthered his education at Midlands Technical College and the University of South Carolina.

Mr. Youngblood served his country, state, and local community for most of his life.  His career in military and civil service span ned 42 years . He served in the Air Force and South Carolina Air National Gua rd and retired as Assistant Chief from McEntire Fire and Emergency Services in 2012, after 27 years of civil service as a firefighter. Throughout his career as a firefighter, he also served at the Fire Department of Columbia Metropolitan Airport, the Taif Fire Department of Royal Saudi Air Force Base , and as a volunteer firefighter in South Congaree, SC. He was also an EMT-I with several agencies in the Midlands area.

Mr. Youngblood fought cancer multiple times.  He was originally diagnosed in 2013 with Non- Hodgkins Lymphoma.  In 2017 his cancer had returned, and this time with metastasis to his bone s .  He underwent extensive treatment to include a stem cell transplant. Unfortunately, his body was unable to handle the effects of the treatment.

Mr. Youngblood is survived by his daughter, Laura Anne (David) Bryant, of Wagener, SC, his granddaughter s , Kayla Lewis of Wagener , and Teresa Lewis of Augusta, GA , his brother, Jerry L. (Alice) Youngblood, of Cayce, the mother of his children, Anne W. Minic , of Columbia, a host of extended family and life-long friends, and many of his favorite “4-legged” friends.

Mr. Youngblood was an avid fisherman, and life-long fan of the South Carolina Gamecocks and Atlanta Braves. He was an animal lover and always did what he could to help those in need. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and attended First Church of the Nazarene in Augusta, GA.

The family of Mr. Youngblood wishes to recognize several people who assisted in his care: his nurse, Elizabeth Snipes, his aide , Jessica Hutto, and the team at Pathway Hospice; as well as Dr. Chaudhry M. Mushtaq, Kitra Nichols , NP , and the team at South Carolina Oncology Associates .

Honorary Pallbearers will be Alejandro Arango, Wallis Elton Byars , Melvin Brooks Snipes, and past and present members of McEntire Fire and Emergency Services.
