She was born in Laurens, South Carolina and was the daughter of the late Walter Thomas
and Frances Godfrey Rutledge and sister to the late Walter Thomas Rutledge, Jr. Lou
was married for 65 years to the late William Arnold Putman, whom she nursed
throughout his long illness. She retired from the South Carolina Department of
Insurance. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-
grandmother, who raised her family to love the God in whom she believed and trusted.
She sacrificed greatly for her family during her entire life. A gifted cook, she made
innumerable meals year after year. Her pecan pies were much sought after. Her cinnamon
rings for her family and friends became a favorite item at her children’s school bake
sales. As a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she soothed crying babies and
played make-believe with active toddlers. Her knitted dish cloths were a much-requested
gift.
She is survived by six children: Elizabeth Jones (Russ), Marilu McGregor (Jimmy), Lynn
Hudson (Billy), Sally Sherrin (the late Dale), Billy Putman (Rebecca), and Alan Putman
(Janice). Also surviving are her two loving sisters, Ruth Rutledge Martin and Ann
Rutledge Cox, with whom she most recently lived at Wesley Commons and was blessed
by their companionship and love. Grandchildren are Rusty Jones (Monica), Christopher
Jones (Donna), John McGregor (Sarah), Thama Matthews (Brian), Lou Kerwin (John),
Sandi Hall (Harvin), Renee Rainey (Willis), Hampton Sherrin (Sherilyn), Trey Putman
(Courtney), Daniel Putman, Allison Murphy (Johnny), Zachary Alan Hance (Bree), and
Grace Putman. Great-grandchildren include Henry, Scarlett, Elena, Caleb, Leah,
Genevieve, John William, Danner, Baylor, Cope, Taz, Lucy, Tripp, Rhett, Noah, Will,
Isabella, Jaimee, and Ansley. Many loving nieces and nephews were also wonderfully
special in her life as well.
