Listen to Obituary

Joyce Stallings Bergh, 81, was born in Charlotte, NC and was one of 3 children born to Excell and Johnnie Stallings.  Joyce was a “middle child” and the only girl.  Joyce was born on July 4th, 1942 and died on May 5, 2024, after a 3 year battle with Parkinson’s.

Joyce graduated from North Mecklenburg High School and went on to have a long career in banking, where she retired from Bank America at the age of 60 after 40 years of service.  Joyce retired as Vice President of Customer Information Systems.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Gene Bergh, her daughter, Tammy Willis, and both brothers, Freddie Stallings  and Mike Stallings.

Joyce is survived by her daughter Kim Stroud (Eddie), son Chip Bergh (Carrie), step daughter Kim Bishop (Bubba) and grandchildren Melissa Casey (Sean), Jonathan O’Brien (Amber), Kelli Williams (Jordan), Morgen Sightler (Zach), Austin Bergh and Evan Bergh.  Joyce is also survived by her 5 great grandchildren Patrick, Conor, Brendan, Parker Mae and Ellis. Joyce is also survived by her sister-in-law, Susan Stallings and nephews Stephen and Jason Stallings. Joyce was lovingly called “Mamaw”, “Mamaw Joyce” and “Maw” by the different grandchildren.

Over Joyce’s 81 years of life, she established residency in North Carolina, Virginia and ended in South Carolina.  Joyce and her husband Gene were avid University of Virginia fans that held tickets and spent many years traveling to football, basketball and baseball games.  Joyce and Gene purchased a lot on Fripp Island in 1989 and built their forever house on Fripp Island in 2002.They were both “Frippers” and loved being with their friends on the island, entertaining, golfing and enjoying the beach.  Through the years, Joyce was both President and Treasurer of the Fripp Island Woman’s Club, she was a member of the ladies’ 9 hole golf club, and she enjoyed the Bible study groups.

Joyce was blessed to have many close friends, co-workers and relatives who loved her, visited her, sent her cards, called her and prayed for her during her last years of her life.  Even as Joyce neared the end of her life, she was so particular about her hair, eyebrows and lipstick and her caregiving staff made sure this happened. The family wishes to thank all the staff at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community and Prisma Hospice, for their exceptional care.

Joyce’s Celebration of Life Service will be held at Independence Hill Baptist Church, 10220 Independence Hill Road, Huntersville, NC 28078 on Sunday, May 12, 2024.  The service will begin at 2p.m. with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Memorials made be made to Independence Hill Baptist Church.
