Listen to Obituary

Jerry Youngblood of Cayce passed away peacefully at his home July 16 following a valiant and brave battle with cancer. He lived a full life of purpose filled with music, friends, pets and compassion and respect for others as well as the environment.

Born in Columbia, he attended Dreher High School, Midlands Technical College, and the University of South Carolina. He was a standout baseball player in area youth and other leagues and has many trophies and awards to his name.

He served in the Merchant Marines and worked in the private sector before entering his career in state government working for several agencies, most notably the SC Dept. of Mental Health, Columbia Area, from which he retired.

He was a 3rd degree Mason, Olympia Lodge, a member of the American Legion Post 6, and an honorary member of the Columbia Media Club. He was an enthusiastic volunteer for many environmental and animal rescue organizations.

He was preceded in death by his father Samuel L Youngblood, mother Vivian T Youngblood, brother Loy L Youngblood, and nephew Ryan Youngblood.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years Alice Brooks of Cayce, niece Laura Bryant (David) of Wagener, and many beloved cousins. He loved his many friends, the countless rescue animals that were part of his life, and the music that he said enriched his soul. He was a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan and refused to ever give up on them.

Moseley Funeral and Cremation is handling arrangements and a celebration of life service at Cayce United Methodist Church is planned for July 26. His wife and family would like to thank Lexington Oncology, Dr. Sindusha Gudipally and her team as well as Amedisys Hospice for their very genuine and professional care.  In lieu of flowers, Jerry would want those able to contribute to Final Victory Animal Rescue, the Animal Protection League pf South Carolina, or the environmental cause of their choice.
