Jean Latimer

November 14, 1925 — April 14, 2024

On Sunday, April 14, Jean Mehrtens Latimer transitioned from this world to the Church Triumphant.  She was born November 14, 1925, in Charleston, SC to the late Hildegard Cappelmann Mehrtens and William Rieppe Mehrtens. As a young woman in Charleston she met a dashing medical student Garrison Latimer, later to become the first general medical practitioner in the Cayce area.  They enjoyed a wonderful marriage of 42 years before his passing in 1987.  Among other spots, Jean Latimer was frequently seen walking the Avenues of Cayce, the streets of Charleston, the Congaree Riverwalk or the USC Horseshoe.  The last 5 years she enjoyed being a member of the Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community.  She was a lifelong Lutheran, most recently a congregant of Mt. Tabor Lutheran.  A child of the Great Depression, she was frugal yet generous.  She was as independent as the 1776 Declaration itself and a conversationalist extraordinaire.  Jean Latimer is survived by four children - Carol Williams, Joan Frierson, Ramsay Garrison Latimer, Jr. and Loretta Shaffer.  Her life was further enriched with 13grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.  A memorial service will be held at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church in West Columbia on Saturday, April 20 at 2:00 pm.  The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Those wishing to make a memorial donation could consider Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church or a charity of their choosing.
