Hazel Maxwell

September 2, 1931 — May 19, 2024

Hazel Rutland Maxwell of Gaston, South Carolina passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2024 at home surrounded by her family. She was one of seven children born to the late Clarence Alvin Rutland and Lessie Williamson Rutland. Hazel began her working career as a cosmetologist. Years later she worked various jobs throughout her life. The job she loved most was working as a caregiver taking care of others. She was working until the age of 85 for Daybreak until her health began to fail. After retiring from Daybreak she was asked to be in their commercials. She agreed and was thrilled when she was recognized by strangers asking if she was the lady in the commercial. In her spare time she loved travelling, playing games and spending time with her family. She especially loved our weekly family meals when her grandson Eddie would cook her favorites. She attended Brookland United Methodist Church until her health began to decline. Hazel is survived by her daughter Debra Hallman (Eddie) and son Thomas Jordan. She is also survived by her grandchildren Amanda Hallman, Eddie Hallman, Jr (Georgia), Wade Jordan and Gabrielle Jordan. She leaves behind numerous great grandchildren. She would want her great grandchildren Ava Hallman and Emery Brisson to know how much she loved and appreciated all their help. She is survived by her sister Deanna Starr of Lexington, SC and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the Prisma Richland Hospital for their dedicated care of Mom over the last several years. A special thank you to Dr. Matthew Cantrell, Mike Bunger, Dr. Robert Arya and Dr. Brad Markowitz. Thank you to the Lexington Medical Center team for their care and compassion. A special thank you to Dr. Brian McNichols. Thank you to the Heart of Hospice for their care, compassion and loving support to not only Mom but our entire family. Even though you were only here for a short time you became like family. Thank you to Shneek, Chris, Jimmy, Sabrina, Murenda and Debra. Our family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, visits, phone calls and meals. Your kindness has meant so much to Mom and us. Mom has requested that there be no funeral service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
