Don McCord, 95, passed away peacefully on July18, 2017 in Columbia, SC.
Mr. McCord is survived by his six children, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
He was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on May 19, 1922 to parents Glenn E. McCord and Bertha Sutton McCord. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1942 where he was assigned to the European Theater flying P-47 combat missions over France and Germany until the end of WWII.
Don and Barbara Child were married after the war and their union produced six children. He attended Iowa State College where he received his degree in 1950. After graduation, he entered the Air National Guard at Fort Wayne, Indiana. After flying 30 different airplanes throughout his service, his passion was always fighters. He completed his military career as a Colonel retiring in 1972 on active duty at 9 th Air Force Headquarters, Shaw Field, South Carolina.
Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, the Paralyzed Veterans of America, or the St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, SD.
