Fredric Dalton Kennedy, known to all as Fred, passed away on January 24th, 2024 in Columbia, South Carolina at the age of 88. Fred was born on April 9th, 1935 in High Point, North Carolina. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Florence, South Carolina where Fred would spend his childhood and attend primary and high school. He left at age 14 to be a Congressional page and then to attend Yale University when he was 16. Those who knew him found Fred to be patient, inquisitive and kind. He was a deep thinker who also loved a good meal and glass of wine.
Fred was a dedicated professional with an extensive and varied career history. He served as the Principal of Global Health Action from 1998 to 2003, as the Associate Dean of the School of Public Health at Emory where he worked from 1978 to 1997, and as an engineer at Hughes Airwest from 1959 to 1965.
In his personal life, Fred cherished his family deeply. He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Kennedy, his brother Robert Kennedy, his sons Tim and Craig Kennedy, and his daughter Kristine Kennedy. He was preceded in death by his father, Dalton Alexander Kennedy, and his mother, Mary Edna Hall.
Fred was a man of many talents and interests. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, reading, playing the piano, and listening to classical music. He was also a devout member of St. Paul Lutheran church in Columbia, SC, and Redeemer Lutheran church in Atlanta, GA.
A memorial service to honor Fred’s life will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Atlanta at a date to be confirmed. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Habitat for Humanity in his memory.
Moseley Funeral and Cremation in Columbia, South Carolina, is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements.
