Elbert Eugene “Gene” Causey, 75, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025. Born on December 28, 1949, in Horry County, he was the beloved son of the late Elbert Causey and Gwendolyn Campbell.
• At the age of 15, Gene moved to Columbia, where he would spend most of his life. At 17, he bravely enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. After returning home, Gene dedicated himself to his family’s businesses, working as a skilled butcher at Causey’s Meat Market and alongside his brother at Causey’s Tree Service for many years.
• Gene was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who placed family at the center of his life. He is survived by his loving wife, Shelia Causey; his sons, Billy Causey (wife, Candy) and Preston Causey; his stepchildren, Brandi Hornsby (husband Billy) , Miranda Oswald, Bobby LaBombard (wife Lisa) , and Kelly Rye, all of whom he helped raise with love and dedication; his mother, Gwendolyn Campbell; his sister, Lois Causey; 25 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews whom he cherished deeply.
• He was preceded in death by his father, Elbert Causey; stepmother, Lilly Causey; stepfather, John Campbell; sister, Sue Westmoreland; and brother, Harold Causey.
• Gene will be remembered for his hard work, his service to his country, and above all, the love and guidance he gave to his family. His legacy will live on in the lives of those he touched.
• Visitations to honor Gene’s life will be held August 20th from 11am-1pm followed by a grave side service at Fort Jackson Cemetery at 2pm. . The family wishes to thank all who have offered their support and prayers during this time
