Dorothy M. Thompson, 93, died March 15 , 2021 at her home in West Columbia, SC. Dorothy was born on October 25, 1927 in Charleston, SC and grew up in North Charleston, SC. She graduated from North Ch arleston High School, worked for the Port of Embarkation, and for General Asbestos and R a y bestos Company (GARCO) in North Charleston. After Dorothy married George V. Thompson on July 2, 1949 , s he moved to Wet Columbia, SC where she lived until her death.
Dorothy attended First Baptist Church, West Columbia and was a member of the JOY Sunday School Class. Dorothy taught preschoolers in Vacation Bible School, served as her Sunday School class’ secretary for many years, and sent cards, and visited on behalf of the church’s Homebound Ministry . Dorothy’s warm smile welcomed members and visitors before Sunday School each week as she served as greeter for the Augusta St. door . Dorothy’s personal ministry was sending cards to family, friends, and shut-ins for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries as well as cards of encouragement and well wishes . Family, friends, and neighbors benefited from Dorothy’s care, compassion, and practical assistance when they faced chronic health problems.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Pete E. and Fannie W. Mizell, and her husband, George. S he is survived by her daughter, Mary Fr ances, of Greenwood, SC and by her surrogate family, Lexie and Mike Chatham, their sons, Josh Chatham, and Will Chatham, all of West Columbia, SC , and their daughter, Laurin, of Spartanburg, SC. Dorothy is also survived by her devoted dog, J. J.
A funetal service will be held at the Celestial Memorial Gardens Chapel on Saturday March 20, 2021 at 11:00 am. Anyone attending the service is asked to wear a mask and observe Covid-19 precautions.
