Listen to Obituary
Clyde B. Blackburn, 88, of West Columbia passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 surrounded by his family. A celebration of life will be conducted at 11:30 am on April 28th at First Baptist Church West Columbia. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:30 am . Born on October 19, 1929 in Aiken, SC, Clyde was the son of the late George Hiram Blackburn and Etta Bruce McMeekin Blackburn. He was predeceased by his first wife, Hampie Bailey Blackburn and brothers, Al and George Blackburn. He is survived by wife of 47 years, Jonnie Price Blackburn, two daughters, Dani Roof (Tommy) of John's Island, SC; Sherri Bouknight (Buddy) of West Columbia, SC; four grandchildren, Reverend Wade Roof (Irina), Lexington, SC; Hampton Roof, John's Island, SC; Anna Harrelson (Jonathan), John's Island, SC; Bryan Bouknight, West Columbia, SC; two great-grandchildren, Abigail Grace and Blackburn Roof of Lexington, SC; a sister, Catherine Williams of Charleston, SC; nieces and nephews. Affectionately known as "Papa Clyde" to all who knew him, he devoted 65 years of service to the American Legion Baseball Program, where he established many life-long friendships and served as a member of the State Committee for 25 years. He was presented a Resolution from the State Senate for his devoted service along with other awards and commendations. Clyde was also a member of the Cayce Masonic Lodge 384 for over 50 years and a Life Member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, after 35 years of service to Bell South. Clyde's greatest love was service to his church. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church West Columbia. There were many Sundays that his illness could have kept him home, but he went with a smile on his face. He served on every church committee at least once, served as a deacon numerous times, taught Sunday School as long as his health allowed, and faithfully visited the sick and homebound. The family would like to thank Caris Hospice, especially Chris Shields, RN, for his exceptional care and compassion,  the SCOA and the staff of the Lexington Hospital Infusion Department. Clyde was many things to many people-husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, etc. He made the world a better place by having touched it with his presence. He taught us many important lessons, the most important being the love of God and family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church West Columbia.
