Byron Thomas Smith of West Columbia was born November 28, 1967, to the late Roscoe Albert Smith and Ruth Roberta Coons Smith. He is survived by his mother, sister, Angela Smith McGee (Tracy), and a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Byron attended Mt. Vernon Nazarene College and the University of South Carolina where he earned a bachelor's in philosophy, served as a graduate assistant in geology, and was a graduate student in geography. He was a member of the South Carolina Geography club for a number of years and won awards for his competitions with the National Geography Association. He participated in a number of community services and missions, locally, nationally, and internationally. He was a life long member of Columbia First Church of the Nazarene.
Medically, Byron was quite an anomaly and suffered from Ehlers Danlos Disease as well as Tourette Syndrome. He was the subject of a couple of case studies for his unusual diseases, one of which he was hired to edit the published version for the Medical Association.
Byron loved and cherished his God, his entire family, his special friend, Monica, and his dog, Rexie. Special thank you from the family go to his home health nurse, Brent Raley, his physical therapist Chris Sample, Dr. Leslie Stuck, Dr. Barry Feldman, Phyllis Williamson, Dr. Terry Norton, Dr. Horvath, Dr. Derderian, Dr. Hicks, and many more health care doctors, nurses, and staff that gave him the ability to accomplish so much. The family also sends our gratitude to the wonderful staff and friends of Columbia First Church of the Nazarene and Suburban Baptist Church for their support, love, and comfort during these difficult times.
