Retired Lt. Col Bruce G. Smalley, known as “Coach” to those closest to him, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 24 th at 4:25pm. He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Marliss Grigg. He is survived by his loving wife, Dale Kaye of Chapin, sister Barbara Allaire of Stowe, Vermont, daughter, Michelle and her husband Scott Kirkpatrick, son, Bruce C. and wife Tina Smalley and daughter, Leslie and her husband Micah Olsen, along with seven granddaughters, two great grandchildren, and his four-legged friend, Jack.
Bruce was the son of the late Elwin and Angie Smalley and spent his formative years on a dairy farm in Stowe, Vermont prior to attending Norwich University where he played baseball and basketball. He ultimately obtained a masters degree in Political Science from The University of Nebraska.
During his twenty-eight years in the United States Army, which included three tours in Vietnam, Bruce received many medals and honors. Some of these include: The Distinguished Flying Cross, The Silver Star, The Legion of Merit, The Bronze Star Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Following his military career, he found success in the financial management and insurance industry until his retirement.
Most recently, Bruce was a charter member of Chapin Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed his Monday morning men’s group for discussions of politics, God, and everything in between, and his Wednesday morning retired men’s bible study. Bruce enjoyed serving the church and community through Meals on Wheels, Vacation Bible School, teaching flag etiquette with Project Love at Chapin and Seven Oaks Elementary Schools, teaching after-school bible study through the Good News Club, and driving Pastor Tim Hanley. He was a vocal participant in the Republican Party.
A celebration of life service will be held Thursday, July 28, 2016 at 12:00 noon at Chapin Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:30 am at the church before the service.
