Betty Ruth (Crapps) Gonzalez

October 18, 1931 — July 18, 2017

Mrs. Betty Ruth Crapps Gonzalez, aged 85 years, of Columbia departed this life Tuesday afternoon after a long illness. All of her daughters were with her at her home when she slipped away from us. She was born in 1931 in Columbia, the only child of the late Baron Cecil Crapps and Corrie Ruth (Asbill) Crapps. Betty was married for thirty-seven years to her beloved husband, Felipe “Phil” Gonzalez, who passed away in January. She is survived by three children: Linda (Gerald) Baker, Teresa (James) Moriarty, and Donna (Thomas) Teuber. She has four living grandchildren (Desiree Moriarty, Sheila Simmons, Meg Teuber, Stephanie Waller) and four great grandchildren. Two of her grandchildren, Shane Hornsby and Heather Ford Goodwin, preceded her in death. Betty was a member of First Baptist Church in Columbia, SC, where she and Phil were long-time members of the Joy of Living Sunday School Class. A proud Gamecock, she graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1952 with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. She retired in 1990 from USC where she worked as office manager for the College of Arts and Science and in several other administrative rules. She was a member of Delta Zeta. Betty loved to dance, walk on the beach, and collect Elvis Presley memorabilia. A memorial service will be held in the Boyce Chapel of First Baptist Church, Columbia, on Friday, July Twenty-First, at 1 pm . A drop-in reception for family and friends will be held from 2-4 pm at her home. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the American Cancer Society in honor of Felipe Gonzalez and Heather Ford Goodwin. Interment will be at a later date at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. “I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: and though this body be destroyed, yet shall I see God: whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not as a stranger.” -- Job 19:25
