Barbara Ann Rickenbaker

d. August 23, 2016

Barbara Ann Rickenbaker, Rick’s sweetheart, has gone Home. Barbara (Mimi, Mimzie, Mrs. Barbara, “Bee”) was Rick’s loving wife, best friend, confidante, encourager, “for-ever-young sweetheart” and the “wind beneath his wings” for 54 years. As evidenced by these pictures, she was always there to stand beside him, stand behind him, and to stand up for him. Rick wants everyone to know that he is the “luckiest” man to ever come out of Jedburg, SC !
Barbara lived “happily–ever-after” with her much loved family at “Home Sweet Home”, In her peaceful and loving “Quail Hollow” neighborhood, she lovingly, joyfully, and prayerfully reared two daughters, Alison Inglish Greco (Paul) and Shannon Elizabeth Burns (Joe). She was the ultimate “Mimi” to Emily Ashton Greco, Paul-David Greco, Matthew Thomas Greco and Caroline Elizabeth Burns. She was their “guardian angel” who loved them immeasurably, unconditionally, and with utmost encouragement and pride.
Barbara was the only daughter of William Joseph Baker (Olanta, SC) and Corrie Mae McKenzie (Kingstree, SC). She was the always caring, big sister to Harry L. Carter (Kingstree, SC) and Nelson McKenzie (Mack) Carter (Columbia, SC). She was “Aunt Barbara” to Jennifer, Justin, Lee, Dale, McKenzie and Meghan. She was best friends with Annie Jo, Doris Ann, Molly, and Claudia. They loved her and she loved them.
After graduating from Kingstree High School (clarinetist in the band, drum major, majorette, beauty queen, “Miss Sandy Bay”), Barbara attended Immanuel College (Georgia), followed by graduating from the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Columbia. She dutifully served others as a medical surgical nurse at the former Baptist Hospital, and as a private duty nurse for those fortunate enough to enjoy her “Florence Nightingale” care and infectious, engaging personality. Her beautiful smile help “brightened the day” for many of God’s sick children.
“Mimi” loved going to the movies (always getting the kid’s box of popcorn, diet coke, and candy), reading books (to help her fall asleep), growing beautiful flowers (which she always had to ‘encourage’ Rick to plant), and watching the graceful butterflies and colorful song birds (and one sweet little hummingbird) as they each danced, fluttered, and dined from the multiple bird feeders outside her kitchen window. “Mimi” thought it was the most beautiful show in town, reflecting God’s handiwork in such a majestic and magical way. Oh, how she loved the Springtime……when new life was everywhere! She also loved coaching Rick (from the car passenger side) to “drive with some sense” and to “cut off the turn signal” after it had served its’ purpose five minutes earlier. As a member of First Baptist Church of West Columbia, Barbara really enjoyed serving and laughing in the kitchen, being a Greeter on Sunday mornings, and being Rick’s “sounding board” prior to his teaching their Sunday school class. Going back to “Sandy Bay” for the annual “homecoming day” at Sandy Bay Pentecostal Church was always eagerly anticipated with the promise of “knock your socks off” country cooking, Brown’s barbeque, and toe-tapping gospel music!
The gathering to honor, respect, and remember the life of Rick’s “forever young” Sweetheart will be at Moseley Funeral & Cremation Service, 914 Meeting Street, West Columbia, SC, on Friday, August 26. The service will begin at 11:30 AM, with the family receiving friends one hour earlier.
In lieu of flowers or a memorial, Barbara would encourage you to hug someone you love, go to a good movie, go out to eat, then go home and thank God for the blessings of your life. That will make her smile!
