Barbara Romine Hogan

July 29, 1923 — October 21, 2018

Barbara Romine Hogan, 95, of Norway, SC, formerly of Tucson, AZ, passed away Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Elizabeth House Hospice in Flat Rock, NC. She was the widow of William S. Hogan, III. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 25, 2018, at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Norway. The family will receive friends after the service. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lebanon United Methodist Church in Eastover, SC.

Born in Tucson on July 29, 1923, she was the youngest child of Lewis Albert and Lillian Chambers Romine.

She graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Business Administration and was a member of Chi Omega sorority. Her career path included homemaking, bookkeeping, and real estate sales. When legal blindness necessitated a career change, she worked as a pre-arranged funeral planner until moving to SC at the age of 82.

Mrs. Hogan is survived by her daughter, Susan H. Young of Norway, SC; grandchildren Andrea W. Darsey (Jad), Kelley W. Conway (Matthew), John David Williamson (Jessica), Elizabeth H. Tzotchev, Will Hogan (Laura), Bill Young (Christy), Malynda Young (Lake Medlin), and Susan Pennock (Chester); 18 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hogan was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, William; son, William S. Hogan, IV; daughter-in-law, Laura Hogan; son-in-law, Robert Young; brother, William Romine and his wife, Trudy; sister, Jeanne R. Culin and her husband, Frank.

Whether at home, at work, or at play, Barbara was constantly focused on making those around her happy. Her wit, intellect, generosity and loving spirit were hallmarks of her character. She excelled in music, academics, athletics, and civic leadership. She loved the outdoors, dancing, and all things Arizona. Needlework, jewelry making, coin collecting, and organizing were hobbies she pursued with passion. After living a fascinating and eventful life, she loved nothing more than to share her experiences with others through her lively storytelling. She was a rich blessing for all who knew her well.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 367, Norway, SC, 29113, or to a charity of one’s choice.
