Aurora Helene Schmitt (The Last Unicorn) of West Columbia gained her wings on Saturday, April 14, 2018 after an almost 2 year battle with rhabdomyosarcoma.  She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family.  She was born in Lexington, South Carolina and is the daughter of Thomas Schmitt and Shantel Kunta . She is survived by h er father, Thomas Schmitt,  “M is s” J essie Sharpe ; her mother Shantel Kunta ; paternal grandmother Pamela Schmitt, Eddie Michael; maternal grandparents Helene and Richard Kunta ; and aunts, uncles, cousi ns . Aurora was preceded in death by her grandfather, Thomas Kline Schmitt. During her brief 5 years on earth, Aurora inspire d people from around the world.  Regardless of what she had to endure during her difficult battle with cancer, including blindness and fractured bones, she did so with a smile on her face and laughter in her heart . To know Aurora was to know life itself.  She loved unicorns, story time, learning braille , the colors pink and purple, and playing with her “treasure.”  Her Make-a-Wish dream came true this past March when s he was able to travel to Disney W orld, meet Minnie Mo use, and ride a rollercoaster.  In her final weeks, knowing what lay ahead for her, she was asked by her father , “Is there anything I can do for you?”  Her response was simple, poetic, and wise beyond her years: “Just be happy, all the time.” The family would like to express their never ending gratitude to everyone who cared for Aurora at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and Hands of Hope Hospice. Friends will be received from 7:00 to 9:00 pm Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Moseley Funeral and Cremation Service. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Friday, April 20, 2018 at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church .  Burial will follow the service at Woodbridge Memorial Park. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
