Eric L. Fowler went home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 18, 2020. He was 88. A life-long resident of West Columbia, SC, he was the son of Benny and Birdie Fowler, and brother to Raymond Fowler and Miriam Fowler Morris King. He graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School in 1952, where he was later inducted into their athletic hall of fame for baseball.
Mr. Fowler fought in the Korean War where he was a Gunner’s Mate on the USS McDermut (DD-677). After the war, Mr. Fowler returned to West Columbia and worked as art director for Columbia Outdoor Advertising for over 33 years.
His love of West Columbia and her people led him to serve on West Columbia City Council for 24 years without missing one meeting. For this accomplishment, Mr. Fowler was presented with the Order of the Silver Crescent, presented to him by former SC Governor, Nikki Haley.
Mr. Fowler was a life-long member of First Baptist Church of West Columbia, where he served as the Fishers of Men Sunday school teacher, as well as serving as a chairman of deacons.
He was married to Mary Jean Spann Fowler for 14 years, until her passing, later marrying Doris Lynch Fowler. Surviving family members are Doris Lynch Fowler, wife of 49 years; Daughter, Cindy Fowler Cavalear and Son-in-law, Tom Cavalear; Daughter, Gina Fowler Harmon and Son-in-law, Alan Harmon; Son, Eric L. Fowler II, and Daughter, Allison C. Fowler; grandchildren, Timothy Cavalear, Alina Cook, Michael Cavalear, and Olivia Cotton, along with 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A private family service will be held at Moseley Funeral & Cremation Service Chapel at 10:00AM Monday, December 21, followed by a public, socially-distanced, graveside service at Celestial Memorial Gardens at 11:00AM with full military rites.
